Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies are on the scene Thursday, June 15, 2023 of a possible recovered World War II-era anti-tank rocket in unincorporated Antioch. As a precaution, residents in the immediate area were evacuated until the bomb squad removes the object from the area. The property is located just east of Lake Catherine, and just east of Lenora Street in unincorporated Antioch.
Late Thursday morning, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence in the 25000 block of West 3rd Street, Unincorporated Antioch, for a report of a found suspicious item. Preliminary investigation shows while a homeowner was doing yardwork, they found something with sharp edges sticking out of the ground. The resident became curious and dug the item out of the ground.
The item unearthed resembles a WWI-era anti-tank rocket. It is unknown how long the object was buried in the ground. It is also unknown if the object is inert or has the potential to explode. Waukegan Bomb Squad is on-scene and will determine how to dispose of the item safely.
Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
