While the City of Chicago is bracing for an influx of migrants to support people without resources of their own, there are already a crowd of people sheltering in the 24th District, according to a photo on the Twitter account for @CPD1617Scanner.

Police stations in Chicago have temporarily served as homeless shelters in bad weather, such as severe cold, for many years, but now some police stations have been used as shelters in all weather conditions.

Recently, the Arlington Heights Police Headquarters at 200 East Sigwalt Street has been used as a sleepover shelter, as well. A few people have been sleeping on the floor of the small vestibule outside the main lobby. The people have come at night, camped out on the floor, and then leave in the morning. The police department didn’t encourage people to sleep overnight at the police station; it just sort of happened.

The lobby is normally used for people who need to come in to the police station to make a police report for accidents, crimes and other incidents, often when victims decide not to have police officers respond to their residences or businesses. The lobby is also used to accommodate people who need to ask the police department for information, or who arrive to bail out people who have been in custody.

In some situations people have slept in the main elongated lobby. When CARDINAL NEWS photos were taken at the police station over the past few weeks, the inner doors were secured, and people were only allowed to sleep in the vestibule.
