A man faces charges in the shooting of a Chicago store owner who furiously swung a baseball bat to fend off a pair of robbers. The dramatic confrontation was captured on the gift shop’s surveillance video.
Cornell Mack, 53, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and discharge of a firearm in an armed robbery attempt that was caught on surveillance video at Quizhpe’s Gifts and Fashion, 2242 North Western Ave, Chicago.
Mack and another unidentified offender walked into the store about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday April 9, 2013 to commit an armed robbery. Two offenders held up Luis Quizhpe and his brother-in-law Luis Ernesto Aucaquizhpe at gunpoint.
Luis Quizhpe swung a baseball bat at the unidentified offender from behind the counter, and was shot in the leg during the struggle. The unidentified offender also apparently accidentally shot Cornell Mack in the abdomen with “friendly fire” while Mac was behind the counter grabbing money from the cash register.
Mack returned to the store counter to attempt to activate a security buzzer that unlocks the door for exit. He was repeatedly hit by a baseball bat by Quizhpe during the additional encounter.
Luis Quizhpe was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center Tuesday and released Wednesday night.
