A great amount of information has been discovered in the past 24 hours about the suspected active shooter at the Highland Park Independence Day Parade shooting on Monday, July 4 2022.

According to Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli, there were Highland Park police already on parade detail that were on the scene when an active shooter began shooting in the area Central Avenue and 2nd Street, Highland Park, at approximately 10:15 a.m. The Independence Day Parade was in progress in downtown Highland Park. Preliminary information indicated the offender was a smaller build white male, between the ages of 18-20 years of age, with long black hair, and wearing a blue or white tee shirt. He began randomly shooting parade spectators from a rooftop while the parade was in progress. However, on Tuesday, police released that the suspect was wearing women’s clothing.

The suspect was later identified as Robert E. Crimo III, a former resident of Highland Park, and a current resident of Highwood.

The rifle was purchased legally in Illinois. The exact specifications of the rifle were not released.

Police investigators believe Crimo planned the attack for several weeks.

Crimo brought a high powered rifle to the parade route and accessed a rooftop via a fire escape ladder, and began opening fire on the innocent people watching the parade.

During the attack, Crimo was dressed in women’s clothing and investigators believe he wore the clothing to conceal his identity, and to help him escape with people who were fleeing the shooting.

More than 70 rounds were fired into the crowd of innocent people.

Following the attack, Crimo exited the roof and dropped his rifle, and he blended in with the crowd.

Crimo walked to the home of his mother, who lives nearby. Crimo borrowed his mother’s vehicle, and the vehicle description of a Honda Fit was released.

A member of the community saw the Honda Fit and called 9-1-1 to tell police the suspect’s vehicle was spotted southbound on Route 41. North Chicago police responded and spotted the vehicle, waited for backup, and performed a traffic stop with no injuries to the police officers.

Inside the vehicle there was a second rifle located with indications that the second rifle was also purchased by Crimo.

Covelli confirmed again that 6 people lost their lives during the press conference; however, later Tuesday afternoon a seventh person died. An additional 30 people were injured by gunfire.

Crimo remains in custody, and Covelli said there are no indications that anyone else was involved with the mass shooting.

During a question and answer period before the announcement of a seventh death, Covelli said none of the victims killed were children. Covelli confirmed over 30 people were injured in the gunfire, at the Tuesday, July 5, 2022 press conference. Victims were transported to area hospitals with varying conditions.

Initially, a motive has not been identified, but police said the shooting appears to be completely random. There is no information to suggested the shooting was motivated by religion, by race, or any other protected status.

Police are investigating social media videos, but stated that no reports were submitted to police before the mass shooting.

The weapons were purchased locally in the Chicago area.

The ATF expedited a trace of the firearm, which was a major investigative lead. Additionally witness statements and submitted videos helps the investigation tremendously.

Everyone in the Highland Park area is asked to report any suspicious activity by calling 911, or Highland Park Police at 847-432-7730. To report any delayed information about this incident, the FBI has established a tipline at 800-CALL-FBI.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force, Highland Park Police, and FBI are leading the investigation into the incident. The incident remains very active, as the offender remains at large. There are dozens of police agencies on the scene and our federal partners are deployed as well.
