Illinois State Police and firefighters and paramedics from Gurnee responded about 7:37 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2022 to a report of a crash with injuries and a fire involving a box truck on I-94 WEST at the 10 Mile Marker. Libertyville Fire Department firefighters and paramedics and a Newport tender crew were also assigned to the scene. A header was visible as firefighters responded to the scene. There was a report that there was an explosion involving the truck when the box truck impacted a white SUV and/or median wall. The crash was located between Route 21 and Route 120, and Lane 1 and Lane 2 of each direction of the tollway were closed.
Illinois State Police and Gurnee firefighters arrived on the scene at Mile Marker 10.25 of I-94 WEST (northbound), and discovered the box truck fully-involved with fire after a crash with a white GMC SUV and with the center wall. The driver of the box truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the white GMC SUV was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening.
The white SUV was located several feet behind the box truck, and a debris track on the roadway located between the point where the white SUV came to rest and the point where the box truck came to rest indicated the truck may have ignited immediately after impact with the SUV.
Illinois State Police are investigating the crash.
