Huntley Fire Protection District firefighters responded about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2022 to a report of a house in the block of 200 Stickley Lane in Lake in the Hills.
Firefighters reported a smoke header in the sky while responding and reported the rear of the 2-story home was fully-engulfed with flames upon their arrival.
Firefighters immediately advanced a hose line to the rear of the house for an exterior attack on the fire that was showing at the back of the house. Positive water supply was established by connecting to a fire hydrant nearby. A search of the interior of the home found no victims inside the house, and firefighters were told that all occupants had safely evacuated. Additional hose lines were advanced for an interior attack inside the house. A hose line was also advanced to protect a neighboring home that was at risk of catching fire. Firefighters were able to limit the damage to the next-door home to heat damage that involved the exterior siding without any structural damage. The fire was declared under control by 2:42 p.m.
When the fire was extinguished, firefighters switched to overhaul mode, checked for extension or hidden fire inside the structure. Fire damage was found to have extended into the rear of the home on the first floor, second floor, and attic. ComEd was called to the scene to disconnect power to the home, but instead used remote shut off to disconnect the power.
No injuries were reported, but the house was severely damaged by fire, smoke and water. Two vehicles that were parked in the garage were also damaged. The home was rendered uninhabitable, and damage was estimated in excess of $300,000.
Firefighters, paramedics and/or command officers from Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove, Kingston, Marengo, South Elgin and Woodstock provided mutual aid assistance to Huntley firefighters either at the scene or via standby at Huntley Fire Protection District fire stations.

Firefighters attacked the fire during extreme weather conditions. A Heat Advisory was in effect at the time of the fire. The heat index at nearby DuPage Airport in West Chicago was reported at 103°F (with 96°F observed) at 1:52 p.m. and 104°F at 2:52 p.m. (with 97°F observed). Wind was southwest at 20 MPH gusting to 28 MPH at 1:52 p.m., and was southwest at 16 MPH gusting to 29 MPH at 2:52 p.m.
The house had working smoke detectors. Although no cause of the fire has been indicated by officials, the extent of fire that appeared early at the rear of the house could mean the fire began outside. Nothing has been confirmed or indicated by officials from Huntley Fire Protection District, however there were several mulch fires connected to extreme heat due to weather conditions in Chicagoland today. Homeowners, should be careful not to allow mulch to be pile near the exterior of a home due to spontaneous ignition of mulch. There was no confirmation whether the homeowner had any mulch on the property on Stickley Lane. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
