Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Countryside FPD and Mundelein Fire Department responded about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2022 to Route 83 (Ivanhoe Road) south of Winchester Road, Fremont Township, for a head-on traffic crash. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located two vehicles with heavy damage. An ambulance from Grayslake was dispatched about 6:31 p.m. as a second ambulance. An extrication response was also requested about 6:31 p.m.
The drivers were the sole occupants of both vehicles. Both were transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. The driver of the BMW sustained life-threatening injuries, and the driver of the Chevrolet sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Preliminary investigation shows a blue BMW 435i, driven by a 55-year-old woman of Round Lake, was traveling southbound on Route 83, south of Winchester Road. For an unknown reason, the driver of the BMW crossed the double yellow lines into the northbound lanes of traffic. The BWM struck head-on a northbound Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 58-year-old man of unincorporated Mundelein.
Route 83 was closed in both directions immediately after the crash.
The crash investigation is ongoing with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit. The Speed Limit along the two-lane (one lane each way) stretch of Route 83 is 50 MPH, according too Google Maps Street View.
