Around 600 Colorado Homes Destroyed By Wildfires, State of Emergency Declared for Marshall Fire in Boulder County, Colorado

According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, multiple reports of powerlines down, transformers blowing, etc, occurred Thursday, December 30, 2021. The electrical problems and downed arcing power lines caused several small grass fires. One grass fire was reported near the 5000 block of N. Broadway, another is near North Foothills and Middle Fork. Crews responded to both fires, but the grass wildfires that broke out in Boulder County, Colorado, rapidly spread eastward and northward with high winds. The extension of the fire into populated areas threatened and destroyed subdivisions. Tens of thousands of people in the town of Superior and the cities of Louisville and Broomfield, Colorado were evacuated.

Seven people were reported injured as of late Thursday night.

By Thursday evening December 30, 2021, at least 580 homes, as well as a hotel and a shopping center, were destroyed by fire. Governor Jared Polis declared a state of emergency around 3:15 p.m. MST in response to the fires caused by winds across the Front Range. A ground delay at Denver International Airport.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the Marshall Fire in Boulder County. Evacuation orders have been given for Louisville, Superior, and portions of Broomfield. In other areas of Broomfield, pre-evacuation orders were activated.

Pre-evacuation orders are in place for portions of Lafayette, Arvada, and Westminster.

The Marshall Fire is not the only fire. The Middlefork fire was reported first, reported at about 10:30 a.m. at North Foothills Highway and Middlefork Road. The fire was knocked down, and no structures were reported lost.

The Marshall Fire was reported just after 11:00 a.m. at South Foothills Road and Marshall Road, and expanded to 1600 acres — destroying areas in Superior, Louisville, and unincorporated Boulder County. The Vista hospital was evacuated.

Less than 12 hours after Colorado’s December 2021 wildfire was reported, the fire surpassed the destruction of the 2013 Black Forest Fire.

Next, a winter storm is forecast to bring high rates of snowfall in the wildfire area about 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 31, 2021 with a Winter Storm Warning in effect from December 31, 05:00 AM MST until January 1, 11:00 AM MST. Over a foot of snow is expected in the Rocky Mountains just west of wildfire area.
