Bail Denied for Suspect Arrested in Chicago, Connected to Murder Scene at Hotel on American Lane, Schaumburg

On Sunday, November 21, 2021, the Schaumburg Police executed a warrant at the residence of suspect, Jose Y. Martinez Segundo, age 23, of the block of 800 West Cuyler Avenue, Chicago. He was taken into custody without incident, and charged with First Degree Murder (Class X Felony).




Schaumburg police, firefighters and paramedics had responded at 11:33 a.m. Friday, November 19, 2021 to a report of an unresponsive person at the Extended Stay – Chicago – Woodfield Mall, 1200 East American Lane. Upon arrival of police, firefighters and paramedics, the body of a female adult victim was discovered and determined to be deceased by Schaumburg Fire Department paramedics. A crime scene was immediately declared.

The victim was identified as Susan J. Tobey, age 28, from the bock of 6000 Interstate Avenue, Portland, Oregon. The victim was transported to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, which determined the cause of death to be from injuries due to blunt force trauma. Other injuries, including sharp force injury and asphyxiation were also recognized. The Schaumburg Police Investigations Division and Forensics Unit investigated this incident. Video surveillance revealed the victim arriving at the hotel alone and entering her room. A short time later, a suspect entered the room and within approximately an hour, exited the victim’s room. That suspect was later identified as Jose Y. Martinez Segundo. Additional evidence was located linking the suspect to the crime scene.




The facts of the case were reviewed by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, who authorized the charge of one count of First Degree Murder (Class X Felony).

Jose Y. Martinez Segundo appeared at the Cook County Circuit Court Third Municipal District Rolling Meadows Courthouse, Tuesday, November 23, 2021 for a bond hearing, and bond was denied. Assistant State’s Attorney Kristina Modesto provided information about the case during the bond hearing.

Circumstances and evidence in the First Degree Murder case …

Victim Susan J. Tobey checked into the Extended Stay America on American Lane Thursday morning, November 18, 2021 and left at noon to shop at a Walmart store.

Susan J. Tobey returned to the Extended Stay America at 1:25 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2021.

Jose Y. Martinez Segundo arrived at the Extended Stay America via Uber ride share at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2021. Surveillance video and witness testimony provided that Jose Y. Martinez Segundo was wearing distinctive clothing. He entered Susan J. Tobey’s hotel room wearing a full head mask, revealing only his eyes.

Wearing a blue latex or nitrile glove on one hand, Jose Y. Martinez Segundo left the hotel room and the hotel around 3:20 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2021, departing via another Uber ride share served by a second driver.

Video surveillance did not show anyone else entering or leaving Susan J. Tobey’s hotel room.

Susan J. Tobey’s body was discovered around 11:30 a.m. Friday, November 19, 2021. Her body was found naked and face down on the hotel room floor with multiple injuries from blunt force trauma, a sharp object, and asphyxiation. Blood on the hotel room wall and Bloodstain Pattern Analysis led to interpretation that Susan J. Tobey was wounded while on the floor.

Cell phone records connected Jose Y. Martinez Segundo to an Uber driver, who confirmed the suspect’s identity.
