Upon arrival, police officers located a Jeep flipped over with a semi-truck resting on top of the front of the Jeep. Police discovered an adult and a child were still inside the Jeep. One person was extricated almost immediately, and a second person in the vehicle was extricated by 6:09 p.m.
Both occupants of the Jeep were transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. One of the occupants, identified as Stefan Bell, 24 years old from Chicago, Illinois later died from injuries sustained in the crash. The other occupant of the Jeep remains in the hospital. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured as a result of the crash.
Fire command initially requested Hillside Towing respond with a rotator crane in case the truck needed to be lifted off of the Jeep for extrication. When both people were removed from the Jeep, Hillside Towing was called off until later for the removal of the vehicles.
The semi-truck tractor and trailer had markings of CR Express Inc. a trucking and transportation company based in Elk Grove Village, Illinois.
The preliminary investigation revealed the impact of the crash resulted in the Jeep rolling over and coming to rest on its roof, according to the Mount Prospect Police Department. The traffic crash is currently being investigated by the Mount Prospect Police Department Major Crash Investigation Team, along with the assistance from a Major Case Assistance Team – Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (MCAT-STAR) Team.
The Mount Prospect Police Department requests anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any additional information to contact the department’s Major Crash Investigation Team at 847-818-5301.
Witnesses said at least two people were removed from the Jeep SUV. CPR was administered on at least one of the victims according to witnesses.
The area near Dempster Street and Linneman Road was closed for several hours Saturday night and into early Sunday morning.
Apparently the semi-trailer truck was eastbound on Dempster Street and crashed with the Jeep while it may have been westbound on Dempster Street. The driver in the Jeep may have been making a left turn to go south on Linneman Road.
Police did not comment on the crash, and the Major Case Assistance Team — Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (MCAT-STAR) team arrived on the scene Saturday night for an extended crash investigation.
