SUV and two-car attached garage fire at house on North Parkway and Elm Street in Prospect Heights.
Prospect Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:01 AM Thursday to a report of a car fire in a garage in the block of 100 North Parkway Prospect Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report initially that a man was in the garage fighting a fire in the garage.
Firefighters on arrival reported fire showing on the northwest corner of the house/garage area of the house. Upon arrival Battalion 9 declared a working fire in the two-car attached garage of the two-story house and assumed command. Engine 9 deployed a 2 1/2-inch hand line into the garage while Engine 39 advanced a 1 3/4-inch hand line into the front door to check for extension and primary search of the first floor. Wheeling Engine 23 performed a primary search of the second floor and checked
for extension above the fire area. Deputy Chief 901 was assigned the Division B.
Tanker 9 nursed Engine 9 and Long Grove Tanker 55 nursed Engine 39. Northbrook
Tower 12 assisted with overhaul in the garage. Tanker 55/Ambulance 55 crew was
assigned to on-deck on the B side of the structure. Deputy Chief 3901 assumed
the Plans Section Chief role with Battalion 9.
The fire was extinguished immediately. The forward progress of the fire was reported stopped at about 12:15 a.m. The fire was held to contents of garage and did not spread into structural members or living areas.
A resident at the house got the SUV out of the garage before firefighters arrived. There was minor damage (soot) to the garage, and the SUV was damaged near the right, rear wheel and fender. Black soot was visible on the brick and stone above the garage door opening. At least three fire extinguishers were used prior to the arrival of firefighters.
No injuries reported. Arlington Heights Ambulance 2 was assigned as EMS/Rehab. Wheeling Chief 2400 was assigned as the safety officer. Palatine Rural Tanker 36 and Glenview Engine 8/Ambulance 7 were held in staging. Long Grove Chief 5500 and North Maine Chief 100 were held at the command post and returned once no fire extension was found and the fire was confined to the garage.
Firefighters from Arlington Heights, Glenview, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Mount Prospect, North Maine, Northbrook, Palatine Rural, Wheeling and other communities assisted Prospect Heights firefighters. Several tankers responded to the scene.
In all, eleven fire companies and six chiefs responded: Seven Companies and three
chiefs on the report and an additional four companies and three chiefs upon declaration of the working fire.
The neighborhood does not have fire hydrants.
