Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Wheeling and Prospect Heights responded about 5:09 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021 to a report of a wrong way crash with injuries on Palatine Road just west of Wolf Road near the border of Prospect Height and Wheeling.
Police were on the scene first and reported a paramedic was on the scene triaging patients involved in a wrong way crash. A minivan was fully-involved with fire, and two other vehicles were also involved in the crash.
All three drivers were able to get out of their vehicles before firefighters arrived. Firefighters extinguished the fire in the minivan, which was also severely damaged. All of the drivers refused medical transportation to a nearby hospital.
Apparently, the driver of the minivan was westbound in the eastbound express lanes of Palatine Road just west of Wolf Road and near the railroad bridge. Apparently two cars veered to the right and were possibly hit by the wrong way minivan and the retaining wall.
After the driver of the minivan passed the two cars, he apparently hit the retaining wall at high speed, causing the severe damage to the front end of the minivan and the eventual fully-engulfed fire.
The adult male driver of the minivan was arrested after Wheeling police administered a field sobriety test. He was handcuffed and taken into custody. His walk to the waiting police vehicle took him past his destroyed minivan.
