Police, firefighters and paramedics responded about 8:39 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2021 to an initial report of a gunshot victim in the block of 2200 Pine Street in Des Plaines, but on arrival discovered that a man was hit in the head with an unknown object after a shot was fired from a gun.
A Des Plaines man attempting to sell designer clothes to someone he met online was robbed just before 8:38 p.m. Monday. At least one shot was fired but police discovered by 8:45 p.m. that the victim was not struck by gunfire, but was struck by something in the head.
The victim had scheduled a meeting in a residential neighborhood in the block of 2200 Pine Street in Des Plaines to conduct the sale, and waited for the potential buyers to arrive, according to the report.
After arriving, the victim was confronted by two people who had exited a dark-colored vehicle. One was armed with a handgun and fired at least one shot, according to Des Plaines police.
One of the offenders then hit the victim in the head with an unknown object. Both offenders then took the clothes, and fled in the dark-colored vehicle. The offenders fled the area westbound on Fargo Avenue prior to police arrival.
Safety Tips for Selling Items Online
• Conduct the sale during daylight/business hours.
• Meet in a well-lit public place, such as your local police department.
• Communicate using a trackable app: Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, text, etc.
• Remember, if something seems too good to be true it probably is.
The victim was transported by Des Plaines Fire Department paramedics to a nearby hospital, and was treated for a head injury.
Any citizen with information about the crime is urged to call Des Plaines police Detective Sgt. Brian Hart at 847-391-5457.
