Police, firefighter, and paramedics from Chicago and Illinois State Police troopers responded about 10:54 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2021 to a report of a crash with entrapment on the southbound Dan Ryan Expressway south of 63rd Street. The driver of a Chrysler 300 with two passengers was traveling at high speed and went airborne and wrapped the roof of the vehicle around a sign pole on the median barrier. The crash was discovered in the express lanes barrier between 64th Street and the Wentworth Avenue bridge. The vehicle was partially hanging over the local lanes.
Firefighter/paramedics worked with extrication tools to free a person from a crashed vehicle during a prolonged extrication as the vehicle was in a precarious position on the center barrier.
Due to the extent of the damage in the Chrysler 300, firefighters weren’t sure if there were a total of three or four patients at about 11:10 p.m.
Ambulance 35, Ambulance 4, and Ambulance 1 responded to the scene with Battalion Chief 19 in command.
The first patient extricated was transported Code Red to Level 1 Trauma Center University of Chicago.
A Special Operations Chief was assigned to the call about 11:31 p.m. for a difficult extrication.
The second patient was extricated by 12:20 a.m. and transported to St. Bernard Hospital in Chicago.
The Illinois State Police declared the crash scene a crime scene by 12:45 a.m. and extrication of the third victim, who was dead at the scene, was delayed for the crime investigation.
Most fire crews left the scene at about 1:55 a.m.
Witnesses reported that the driver of the crashed Chrysler 300 and the driver of another vehicle were weaving in traffic together at high speeds before the crash occurred, and that the other vehicle sped away from the scene after the crash.
Most lanes were blocked during crash rescue and investigation operations. The crash occurred just before the split from the Dan Ryan Expressway I-90/94 to the I-90 Chicago Skyway and I-94 Dan Ryan Expressway. At least one lane to the Chicago Skyway was also blocked.
The crash was initially incorrectly reported by a 9-1-1 caller as having occurred on the Dan Ryan Expressway at 71st Street.
