Winds will start to pickup about 1:00 p.m. with a steady southeast wind of 22 MPH and gusts to 32 MPH by 6:00 p.m. Gusts over 25 MPH will continue until about 9:00 p.m. Sunday when winds will be from the northeast. Southeast winds Saturday will shift from the east by midnight Saturday/Sunday and from the northeast by 10:00 a.m. Sunday.
Forecasters expect about 5 inches of snow accumulation by midnight Saturday/Sunday when the most intense snowfall at almost 1 inch/per hour will likely fall between 5:00 p.m. and midnight. Snow flurries may continue until about 5:00 a.m. Monday.
Areas far west and south of the northwest suburbs (well south and west of DeKalb and Joliet) will see mixed precipitation, including rain, freezing rain and sleet. DeKalb and Joliet will see mixed precipitation before heavy snowfall.
Weather Radar shows precipitation moving eastward south of I-80 and east of the Lake Michigan – Chicagoland shoreline. Precipitation echoes south of I-80 and south of Peoria and Decatur are building rapidly at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, January 30, 2021
One more timing graphic for this afternoon-early evening: Some parts of area will start out as mixed precip or even plain rain in spots (see graphic for details), with this mix lasting up to 2-5 hrs before changing to all snow by ~7pm.
