The investigation of a house fire on Ivy Lane near Arlington Heights Road is centered around a chimney flue where an animal nest may have ignited, and resulted in fire extending to a fire in a 2-story home. Fire spread from the chimney flue to the attic and second floor bedroom where most of the fire was located.
Firefighters stopped the fire from extending from the attic through the roof, but the fire reached the roof outside above the west wall of the home. Firefighters attacked the fire with an exterior hose line from the ground, and an interior line brought upstairs through the home. The fire apparently extended from the chimney flue along the chase into the attic above the bedroom and into the bedroom.
A smoke detector alerted residents, and all residents safely evacuated the home before firefighters arrived. Simultaneously, someone apparently saw flames from outside, because the fire was initially reported (via 9-1-1 call) to be at Techny Road and Arlington Heights Road just north of Ivy Lane and across the ComEd right-of-way for high tension distribution power lines.
Police and firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 8:52 p.m. Friday, January 22, 2021 to the report of a house fire in the block of 200 East Ivy Lane in Arlington Heights.
Police and firefighters on arrival discovered flames blowing out a second floor bedroom window and extinguished the fire with the exterior and interior hose line attack.
Arlington Heights Engine 4’s arrived first, passing the scene to connect to a fire hydrant and make room for the first tower ladder truck. Buffalo Grove’s tower ladder and Palatine’s quint arrived next and to front positions at the house fire scene. Both of these ladder-capable trucks are closer than Arlington Heights Tower 1 at the downtown station, and are automatically assigned to the Ivy Hill neighborhood.
Firefighters were able to stop the fire from breaking through the roof from the attic, but flames did reach the roof at the top of the west wall at a location near the chimney flue.
The fireplace and the chimney flue was installed after the original construction of the home. There is no brick chimney outside the home. Instead the flue rises interior to the west wall at an interior location on the west area of the home.
Buffalo Grove’s tower ladder was at the front of the home with the main aerial raised, but the tower ladder crew did not use their master stream.
The fire was knocked by about 9:09 p.m. but firefighters spent significant time chasing hot spots to completely extinguish the fire, while using a thermal imaging camera to detect heat and hidden ignition or smoldering areas.
Northbound Arlington Heights Road was blocked during firefighting operations — a duration of about one hour.
