Baseball great and home run king Hank Aaron died in his sleep at home in the Atlanta metropolitan area on Friday, January 22, 2021 at the age of 86 — two weeks shy of his 87th birthday on February 5.
Hank Aaron played for the former Milwaukee Braves (1954-1965), the Atlanta Braves (1966-1974), and the Milwaukee Brewers (1975-1976).
Hank Aaron “Hammering Hank” broke Babe Ruth’s home run record of 714 with 715 home runs on April 8, 1974. Amid racist death threats and hate mail during the 1973 season, Hank Aaron had fallen short of tying the record held by Babe Ruth. Hank Aaron feared he might not live to see the 1974 season.
Hank Aaron’s 755th career home run on July 20, 1976, occurred while playing for the Milwaukee Brewers, and stood as the MLB record for 33 years until it was broken in 2007 by Barry Bonds. Hank Aaron also had 3,771 career hits with a batting average of .305.
Aaron’s first home run on April 23, 1954 occurred during his first year as a major league player, and also while playing for the Milwaukee Braves. Following the 1965 MLB season, the Braves moved to Atlanta to reach a larger audience. The Braves had roots in Boston before Milwaukee.
