A pileup with more than 40 vehicles has closed Interstate 70 in both directions about 20 miles west of Indianapolis. Officials said all lanes of I-70 are expected to remain closed until Thursday night. Aerial footage is silent from source.
Police and fire rescuers responded to Interstate 70 about one mile west of the Plainfield, Indiana when about 40 vehicles crashed Thursday afternoon on Interstate 70 in Hendricks County, sending 12 people to local hospitals. The crash site is just southwest of Indianapolis.
At least 20 semitrailers and another 15-20 other types of vehicles crashed, according to Indiana State Police, who say weather was a factor.
Six victims were transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital, four victims were transported to IU Health West Hospital and two victims were taken to Hendricks Regional Hospital. One victim was listed in critical condition.
A crash involving 40 to 50 cars and semis has closed both lanes of Interstate 70 in Hendricks County. Some people attempted to extricate a man from a pickup truck with their own saws.
