A pride flag typically refers to any flag, and most commonly a rainbow type flag, that represents a segment or all of the LGBT community. Pride in this case refers to the notion of gay pride. The rainbow flag is a widely used LGBT flag and LGBT symbol that is also frequently displayed on personal social media profiles or timelines.
Progressive-Traditionalist Schism
The United Methodist Church is the largest mainline Protestant denomination in the United States, and the third-largest religious denomination.
Compared worldwide, the United Methodist Church is one of 80 Methodist, Wesleyan and related Uniting and United Churches in the World Methodist Council, which represents over 80 million members in 138 countries, according the World Methodist Council.
The United Methodist Church announced plans January 3, 2020 to split into two denominations in an attempt to end a years-long, contentious fight over same-sex marriage church leaders.
The schism discussion, as part of the 2020 General Conference originally scheduled to be held in May 2020 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was postponed due to the ongoing Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. The re-scheduled General Conference is tentatively scheduled to be held in August 2021.
Leaders of the denomination of the United Methodist Church said they had agreed to spin off a “traditionalist Methodist” denomination, which would continue to oppose same-sex marriage and refuse ordination to LGBT clergy, while allowing the remaining portion of the United Methodist Church to permit same-sex marriage and LGBT clergy for the first time in its history.
The schism agreement pledged $25 million to the new “traditionalist” denomination, which will break away from the United Methodist Church, and the new denomination would drop any claim to United Methodist assets, such as church-owned agencies. Any existing parish will be set by default as a member of the United Methodist Church (UMC) and would have to conduct votes to convert to the traditional or conservative Methodists.
In 1972 the United Methodist Church added language to its Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church that “homosexual persons no less than heterosexual persons are individuals of sacred worth.” The United Methodist Church traces its origins to the Evangelical Revival of the 18th Century in which John and Charles Wesley were prominent leaders. Methodist societies were organized in North America in the 1762. As the movement grew, American Methodists petitioned John Wesley to send lay preacher missionaries to strengthen and extend their ministry, according to the World Methodist Council.
