Live: NBC News NOW – Jan. 6 | Full Coverage on D.C. Protests, Electoral College Count
Thousands of protestors arrived at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D. C. as a part of rallies Wednesday, January 6, 2021 to protest an alleged fraudulent presidential. The crowd is believed to consist of Trump supporters and ANTIFA actors with a counter-message to the MAGA rallies. The arrival of thousands of protesters is occurring the same day that Congress is in session for the purpose of voting to certify that President-elect Joe Biden won the election.
The crowd was packed between the Washington Monument and the Ellipse, also known as President’s Park South, which is south of the White House and north of Constitution Avenue and the National Mall.
Witnesses reported that the crowd broke or broke through steel barricades and ran past security personnel — wearing personal protective gear, and some without any protective gear.
Capitol Police ordered evacuations of two Capitol campus buildings — the Library of Congress James Madison Memorial Building and the Cannon House Office Building. Both buildings are located across Independence Avenue from the Capitol.
