New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo got irritated and descended into a condescending tit for tat with reporters Wednesday, November 18, 2020 while denying that New York City public schools would be shut down due to a spike in coronavirus cases. New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio announced city school closures the same day.
The disrespectful conversation began when Wall Street Journal reporter Jimmy Vielkind asked Gov. Cuomo whether he would overrule any decision by New York City officials to close schools.
Another unidentified reporter backed up Vielkind, asking the governor if the schools were closing “tomorrow” and saying he didn’t think Vielkind was obnoxious at all.
Cuomo replied, “Well, I don’t really care what you think. Of course, you agree with him because you’re in the same business with him.” Cuomo avoided answering whether schools would open “tomorrow,” but only responded, “The schools are open by state law.”
Moments later, New York Times reporter Jesse McKinley broke the news to Cuomo that de Blasio’s office had announced the school closures beginning Thursday, November 19, 2020.
The governor’s condescending and hostile exchange with reporters about orange zone law brought backlash on social media with messages pointing to Cuomo’s failure to protect nursing home residents while a hospital ship was docked in New York City, and writing a book about his successful management of the COVID-19 pandemic while the world is still in the midst of the pandemic and possibly facing a more severe second wave.
