Police and firefighter/paramedics from Chicago responded about 7:05 p.m. Thursday, October 8, 2020 to a report of a restaurant fire at Belmont Snack Shop, 3407 Belmont Avenue. Initially the fire was reported in the area of Belmont and Elston, but within minutes the fire was discovered at the Belmont Snack Shop just west of Kimball Avenue.
CFD Battalion 7 on arrival reported a restaurant with an apartment above, and a fire. All companies were still working at 7:31 p.m. in the mixed occupancy 1-1/2-story building, 25 by 50 square feet.
An extra truck was requested at about 7:38 p.m. and then Still and Box was activated at 7:41 p.m. Firefighters were using three handlines and at least one master stream from a tower ladder and a squad snorkel.
Firefighters were making good progress by 8:09 a.m., and the main body of fire was declared extinguished and the Still and Box struck out by 8:14 p.m. The Belmont Snack Shop surrounded by brick walls on ground level was destroyed inside, along with a 2nd-story wood frame apartment.
No injuries were reported, but four people were displaced from their apartment by the fire.
