Fire investigators responded to determine the cause of the destruction of four Stone Park apartment buildings.
Police from Stone Park and firefighter/paramedics from Melrose Park Fire Department responded about 2:45 p.m. Saturday, September 5, 2020 to a report of an apartment fire at the rear of the building at 1822 36th Avenue in Stone Park. The fire spread to three buildings by about 3:00 p.m. Some of the buildings in the neighborhood have rear decks, and their are detached garage with power lines in the rear alley of the neighborhood.
UPDATE: Twelve families were displaced after an extra alarm fire destroyed 12 apartment units in four 3-story apartment buildings and damaged two or three detached garages. Initially fire investigators believe fire started in wooden multi-story back porches.
A MABAS Division 20 Box Alarm #300 was activated at 2:50 p.m. A Box Alarm to the Second Level was activated at 3:02 p.m. with Fire Command reporting three 3-Flat buildings on fire. A Box Alarm to the Third Level was activated at 3:30 p.m.
Firefighters from Bellwood, Franklin Park, and Northlake responded to the Box Alarm at 2:50 p.m. Maywood firefighters stood by in a Melrose Park fire stations.
Firefighters from Maywood, Leyden, Schiller Park, River Grove responded to the 2nd Level Box Alarm at 3:02 p.m. River Forest firefighters stood by in a Melrose Park fire station.
Firefighters from Rosemont, Broadview, Westchester, Elmwood Park LaGrange Park (?), Franklin Park, and Hillside responded to the 3rd Level Box Alarm at 3:30 p.m.
The American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
