The USNS Comfort military hospital ship left New York on Thursday after a month in the city as coronavirus cases in America’s epicenter continue to decline.
The USNS Comfort departed Manhattan pier shortly after midday (1600 GMT) to return to homeport Naval Station Norfolk in Norfolk, Virginia.
The USNS Comfort arrived at Manhattan pier (Pier 90 at the cruise ship terminals) on the Hudson River on March 30, 2020 to absorb the potential overload on existing hospitals in New York City and New York state due to the Coronavirus Pandemic 2019-2020.
President Donald Trump dispatched the 1,000-bed ship to New York City when projection indicated New York state might need to double hospital beds to 100,000 plus during the peak of its Coronavirus outbreak.
However, total hospitalizations peaked at about 20,000 in mid-April, which remained below the capacity of New York’s existing hospitals. Ultimately, the ship’s crew only treated 182 patients. About 70 percent of the hospital ship’s patients were diagnosed with COVID-19, according to the US Navy.
A temporary hospital at Javits Center is scheduled to close around May 3 to May 5, 2020.
Official statistics from NYC Health reported the Coronavirus outbreak killed 12,571 New York City residents as of April 30, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. Also as of April 30, 2020, 41,648 people were reported hospitalized to date.
