Sky News’ Stuart Ramsay takes an in-depth look at the efforts of one hospital in Italy to keep its health care workers from getting infected by COVID-19.
At Cotugno Hospital, which specializes in infectious diseases, proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and procedures are the important factors preventing transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Coronavirus COVID-19.
In all of Italy, 66 doctors have died from Coronavirus COVID-19, according to statistics from the National Federation of Orders of Surgeons and Dentists; but not a single health care worker has been affected by the illness at Cotugno Hospital in northwest Naples, Italy.
Unlike hospitals in northern Italy, the Cotugno Hospital in southern Italy took the time to prepare by collecting highly effective PPE, developing rigorous procedures, and developing detailed hospital design separating rooms and corridors, according to a Sky News article.
Patients at the hospital are treated by staff wearing specialized masks similar to gas masks, not N95 masks or surgical masks that are worn by the ancillary staff in the ‘cleaner’ areas. The eyes, nose, mouth and bodies of each health professional that has contact with infected patients are protected by a large mask that is sealed with hooded waterproof suits. The staff follow specific protocols that includes separating infected areas from sterile ones. An interstitial compartment is used to transfer medications drawn by ancillary staff in the sterile area to PPE-equipped health care professional in the infected patient’s room. Even the corridor is separated lengthwise by a red-and-white rope about waist high to separate the hot zone from cleaner zones.
Specific protocols exist for donning and removing PPE, and entering the different sectors of protective zones in the hospital. An armed guard supervises conduct and application of proper procedures in the corridor.
