Health officials announced Sunday afternoon March 8, 2019 that a seventh person in Illinois was diagnosed with coronavirus COVID-19. The patient is a man in his 60’s, who lives in Chicago, and is hospitalized in serious condition.
Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwardy said that this is likely a case of “community transmission,” since the man had not traveled and had no connection to other coronavirus cases. The seventh patient has no known connection to the sick teacher at Vaughn Occupational High School.
“We do expect to see additional cases,” Arwady said as she has said in previous press conferences. “It signals how important it is for everybody who has flu-like symptoms to stay home from school or work unless needing to seek medical attention. It is important for us all to protect older residents and those with underlying medical conditions.”
Director of Illinois Department of Public Health Dr. Ngozi Ezike said that she encourages people to plan now in case schools close or individuals are too sick to work.

As of Sunday evening March 8, 2020 the Johns Hopkins University CSSE global tracking map indicated 109,835 people were infected worldwide and 537 are infected in the United States. The map indicated 21 people have died: 17 deaths in King County, Washington; 1 death in Lee County, Florida; 1 death in Santa Rosa County, Florida; 1 death in Placer County, California; and 1 death in Snohomish County, Washington.
