5th Illinois Coronavirus COVID-19 Patient Suspected at University of Chicago Medical Center Late Monday

The University of Chicago Medical Center reported Tuesday, March 3, 2020 that the hospital is treating its first suspected coronavirus COVID-19 patient, which would be the fifth known case in Cook County and in Illinois. University of Chicago Medical Center Medical center officials reported the patient was admitted late Monday, March 2, 2020, adding that the hospital is “following rigorous isolation and infection control protocols to ensure the safety of our staff, patients and our neighbors.” If confirmed, the patient would be Cook County’s fifth coronavirus case and also the fifth in the state.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported Monday March 2, 2020 that a man and his wife tested Presumptive Positive for COVID-19. The woman tested positive Monday, March 2, 2020 after the man tested positive Saturday, February 29, 2020. The IDPH reported the man was being treated in isolation at Northwest Community Hospital In Arlington Heights, while his wife was well enough to stay home. She is also in isolation at home. Both coronavirus patients are in their 70s.

A Chicago couple were the first and second coronavirus patients in Illinois. They were also the first case of human-to-human transmission in the United States. The man (the second Illinois case/January 30, 2020) contracted the virus from his wife (the first Illinois case who was also the second United States case/January 24, 2020). The man had not recently travelled to China. Both were treated were treated at AMITA Health St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates and released back to their home where their health was monitored daily under the guidance of the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control.
