Trump can hold funds from sanctuary cities February 2020; Supreme Court Could Be Next
[Google] [Bing] U.S. appeals court ruled on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 that President Donald Trump’s administration can withhold millions of dollars in law enforcement funds from states and cities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities — ICE.
The unanimous decision by a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan reversed a lower court ruling. There exists the possibility of an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Judge Reena Raggi said the case “implicates several of the most divisive issues confronting our country” including immigration policy and law enforcement, illegal immigrants and the ability of state and local governments to adopt policies the federal government dislikes.
In 2017, the Trump administration established conditional receipt of funds, known as Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants, dependent on the cooperation of state and local governments to provide federal immigration authorities with access to local jails, and to provide advance notice of release of immigrants from custody.
The policy affected nearly $26 million of annual grants to seven states.
