Two shiny foreign objects about 4 mm long and 1 mm wide were found Monday, January 27, 2020 in ground sirloin that was sold at the butcher counter at Mariano’s in Arlington Heights on Sunday, January 26, 2020 about 6:00 p.m. The discovery was made three days after ground meat was recalled due to possible contamination with thin pliable plastic, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS). Initially it is unknown if these findings by customers are related, and the packaging methods received by the customers were different.
Only one Mariano’s customer, who shopped at the store at 802 East Northwest Highway in Arlington Heights, complained of finding the foreign object in PSL ANGUS GROUND SIRLOIN sold at Mariano’s. From a distance, the foreign objects looked like aluminum foil or shiny Mylar, but also looked like plastic, and possibly transparent, in a close-up view.
The two foreign objects were found in 0.41 LBS of ground sirloin during the customer’s meal preparation late afternoon Monday, January 27, 2020.
Friday’s recall was activated after two PRE customers complained after finding foreign matter in the form of plastic in beef. The products subject to Friday’s recall bear establishment number “EST. 6916” printed on the right, front side of the package. These items were shipped to retail locations in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The meat from Friday’s recall was packed by Amity Packing Company, Inc. of Chicago. According to the USDA FSIS, Amity Packing Company Inc. was recalling about 2,020 pounds of raw ground beef that was shipped to the nine states,
1-lb. VACUUM-PACKED, packages containing “Pre 95% LEAN/5% FAT GROUND BEEF” with lot code “0060,” case code “11402” and USE/FREEZE BY date of “01/31/2020” on the product label. PRE is a company that sells packaged meat that is sealed and packaged outside the grocery store.
There is no known recall for the new discovery in Mariano’s meat, and the meat at Mariano’s was wrapped in traditional brown paper wrap in front of the customer — a much different packaging method compared to the way the PRE meat is sealed, packaged and shipped in a special retail package. Initially there was no information regarding whether Mariano’s uses the same meat packing company as PRE, or whether these foreign objects were similar in any way. A spokesperson at PRE described that the plastic pieces that caused the recall activation were only a couple millimeters in length, but some were longer — like rectangles or strips of transparent plastic.
