The main system of falling precipitation of all types has left the area to the east. The forecast calls for slight precipitation in the form of rain until about 1:00 p.m. Snow flurries will be in the mix from about 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Freezing drizzle and rain, which began about 10:45 p.m. Friday, has ended with minor glazing of shrubs, trees and vehicles. In Arlington Heights, least 3.5 inches of snow was measured Saturday morning about 4:41 a.m., after settling was enhanced by light rain and sleet overnight. Yesterday’s snow was moderately light, but this morning the snow cover is heavy with high water content.

The updated forecast high temperature is 36°F, a couple degrees colder than yesterday’s forecast for today. Temperatures will drop below 32°F by 3PM, and Sunday’s low in the morning is forecast at 3°F from 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. That’s a degree colder than yesterday’s low forecast for Sunday.

The big concern Saturday will be wind gusts from the west that will increase at about 9:00 a.m. Gusts of 21 MPH will increase and peak at 43 MPH about 2:00 p.m. Winds will maintain gusts over 30 MPH until about 2:00 a.m. Sunday. Some power outages are likely has brittle ice-covered branches affect power lines. The other concern is unremoved snow on sidewalks, driveways, and roadways, where slush and ice/sleet-covered snow will turn into hard ice Saturday afternoon.

Weather Radar (also nexrad.chgowx.com) at 8:25 a.m. Saturday shows slight precipitation moving southwest to northeast. Most of the precipitation in northeast Illinois is rain, but some snow shows on radar in far north Winnebago County and far north McHenry County, north into parts Wisconsin.




 O’HARE FORECAST … 

Today: Rain and snow showers before 2pm, then a slight chance of snow showers between 2pm and 4pm. Areas of fog before 10am. Temperature rising to near 36 by 10am, then falling to around 23 during the remainder of the day. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 20 mph becoming west 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 3. Wind chill values as low as -18. Breezy, with a west wind 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 15. Wind chill values as low as -18. Blustery, with a west northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 11. Wind chill values as low as -1. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
