The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Minnesota Vikings, 27-10, on Saturday, January 11, 2020 to advance to the NFC championship game against winner of tomorrow’s contest between the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packer. With a crucial rematch victory over the Seattle Seahawks on December 29, 2019, the 49ers finished the season 13-3 and earned the No. 1 seed. The New Orleans Saints were beaten by underdog Minnesota, who then had only five days to rest and prepare for the 49ers today, Saturday January 11, 2020. As No. 1 seed, the San Francisco got to rest last weekend.
Today’s 49ers’ victory was their first postseason game in six years, decisively beating the Vikings in a divisional round playoff game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on a sunny day with temperatures around 59 degrees. Today’s game was the first playoff game and first playoff game victory in the San Francisco 49ers’ new Levi’s Stadium starting at 3:30 p.m. CT on NBC.
The 49ers scored first with a touchdown in the first quarter, but it was the 49ers defense that dominated. The 49ers’ defense shut out the Vikings in the second half, holding them to their touchdown and field goal for 10 in the first half.
Jimmy Garoppolo’s first NFL playoff start was outstanding (11 for 19 for 131 yards, and a touchdown), except for a first quarter interception that the Minnesota Vikings turned into a field goal. Garoppolo has an excellent passing game with a superior view of the field, but it was the running game that was impressive today. The 49ers ran for 186 yards, with 105 yards and two rushing touchdowns from Tevin Coleman
Before today, San Francisco’s most recent playoff win was a victory over the Carolina Panthers, 23-10, on January 12, 2014. The game marked the third time 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh took the team to a conference championship game, marking his recognition as the first head coach in NFL history to take his team to a conference championship game in each of his first three seasons.
In the NFC championship game on January 19, 2014, the 49ers lost to the Seattle Seahawks 23-17 with quarterback Colin Kaepernick fumbling for a turnover and throwing two interceptions.
Next week (January 19, 2020) the 14-3 San Francisco 49ers team will get one more day of rest than their next opponent — either the Seattle Seahawks or the Green Bay Packers, who meet Sunday January 12, 2020.
Focusing on preparation, one game at a time, and hosting the NFC Championship; the San Francisco 49ers will be waiting at Levi’s Stadium for their contest with either the Packer or the Seahawks.
