Gurnee police responded about 11:00 a.m. Monday December 30, 2019 to a report of a retail theft of jewelry at Helzberg Diamonds, 6557 Grand Avenue.
Police received a report that a male offender entered the Helzberg Diamonds store and requested to see jewelry in the display. During a consultation with a sales associate, the suspect took the merchandise and ran from the store, according to Gurnee Police Department.
The suspect made no threats to sales associates, and there were no indications a weapon was involved in the theft.
The estimated value of the merchandise is $50,000, according to Gurnee Police Department. Details about the merchandise were not initially released.
Upon arrival, police officers set up a perimeter and requested search assistance from a Lake County Sheriff’s Office a K-9 unit. No tracking details were initially released, but police ultimately determined the suspect left in a vehicle. A description of the vehicle was not initially released, or whether police were aware of a vehicle description.
The suspect was described as a male/black, wearing a tan hat, a tan or yellow hooded, zippered Carhartt jacket, blue jeans, and tan shoes. He is missing a front, upper left tooth. The police department released photos of a male/black believed to be the suspect. The images were captured by store security surveillance cameras. Gurnee police did not initially provide an estimated physical height and weight description of the suspect.
