State police in Colorado on Sunday December 15, 2019 encountered a male fugitive from downstate Illinois, who was wanted for a double homicide and an armed bank robbery in Iroquois County, Illinois during the past weekend. Matthew Borden, 43, of Melvin, Illinois, who was charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Pamela Williams of Martinton, Illinois, and the death of Brian Musk, of Milford, Illinois, fled Colorado law enforcement officers after he was spotted. Their bodies were found Friday and Saturday, respectively.
On Sunday, December 15, 2019 police said Borden stole a car in Dexter, Iowa. Police in Colorado were notified that Borden was driving a stolen white Toyota Camry with Iowa plates, and that he was headed westbound on Colorado Highway 14. Police had been on the lookout for the vehicle and Borden, according to Weld County Sheriff’s Department in Colorado.
A Colorado State Patrol trooper and an Ault (Colorado) police officer located the vehicle, but Bordon fled in the stolen vehicle, and led the police on a high-speed chase that ended with a crash one mile north of Pierce, Colorado on U.S. Route 85. Pierce is located about two miles north of Ault, and about 70 miles north of Denver.
Borden fired shots at the trooper and the police officer, who staged nearby while a SWAT team responded to the crash scene. Later, Bordon was found dead next to the stolen vehicle.
On Saturday, December 14, 2019 about 6:00 a.m. police found the body of Brian Musk when they were called to investigate a burglary at Milford Auto Parts on Illinois Route 1 in Milford.
Iroquois County Sheriff’s investigators and Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum arrived and also requested Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigators. On Friday, December 13, 2019, Pamela Williams had been found dead in a ditch southwest of Sheldon, which is about six miles northeast of Milford near the Illinois-Indiana border. Information about the autopsies of the victims was not initially released.
Iroquois County police, U.S. Marshals Service and the Colorado State Patrol joined resources to investigate the homicides of Williams and Musk. Borden was identified as a person of interest in both cases, according to police.
Borden was acquainted with both Musk and Williams, and was also wanted by the U.S. Marshals on a probation violation, with a warrant for his arrest issued earlier in December.
In February 2017, Borden was released from prison and began serving five years of probation. According to U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois, Borden was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison for robbing the Dewey State Bank of over $6,000 on October 7, 2006. Dewey is located about 50 miles southwest of Sheldon and about 5 miles west of Rantoul and Interstate 57 in Champaign County.
