Johnny Cammareri proposes to Loretta Catrorini.

Danny Aiello, known for his roles in the 1987 romance-comedy “Moonstruck” which also starred Cher and Nicholas Cage; and the 1989 comedy-drama “Do the Right Thing” has died after a brief illness, according to his publicist. Danny Aiello was 86 years-old.

A regular guy, Manhattan-born Aiello worked several jobs — at Greyhound for one — and served as a union president, before breaking into film in the early 1970s. While breaking into acting, he had roles in several movies, including “The Godfather Part II,” “Harlem Nights” and “Dinner Rush.”

In Moonstruck he played Johnny Cammareri, the older brother of Nicholas Cage’s character Ronny Cammareri. Cher’s character Loretta Castorini ends up with Johnny instead of Ronny.

“It is with profound sorrow to report that Danny Aiello, beloved husband, father, grandfather, actor and musician passed away last night after a brief illness. The family asks for privacy at this time. Service arrangements will be announced at a later date,” according to Aiello’s publicist.

After proposing to Loretta Catrorini and while leaving at the airport, Johnny Cammareri tells Loretta to call his brother Johnny, who she never knew about.
