Larry Page, who co-founded Google with Sergey Brin in 1998, is stepping down as CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet (GOOG). Sundar Pichai, the current CEO of Google and a longtime executive at the company, will take over as CEO of Alphabet in addition to his current role, Alphabet announced Tuesday afternoon.
After stepping down as Google CEO in August 2001, in favor of Eric Schmidt, Page re-assumed the role in April 2011. Page left as CEO a second time in July 2015, to become CEO of the new Alphabet Inc., while Google’s assets would be reorganized focus on Internet services, and Alphabet would drive major advancements in a variety of industries.

Several media sources reported that Larry Page was missing as an active CEO for Google. Business Insider reported that compared to day-to-day CEO activities, he was spending more time secluded on his Caribbean island, and described him as an introverted co-founder who faded from public life. The Washington Post reported in June 2019 Larry Page did not attend annual shareholders meetings in 2019 or 2018.
Under Google, Google News was established in 2002, Gmail in 2004, Google Maps in 2005, and Google Chrome in 2008. Google’s failed social network known as Google+ was established in 2011, and was shut down in April 2019.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin will continue to serve on Alphabet’s board of directors. Sundar Pichai is an engineer who became the chief executive officer (CEO) of Google on October 2, 2019. The former Product Chief of Google, was unveiled as the up and coming CEO on August 10, 2015, as the restructuring process began, and resulted in Alphabet Inc. becoming the parent company of its largest subsidiary, Google.
