Firefighters in the U.S. are using drones for emergency scenarios like fires and search and rescue missions.

Public safety agencies across the nation have begun adopting the use of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS), or drones, to further support their response to public safety emergencies and criminal investigations. In a joint venture between the Police, Fire and Public Works Departments, drone technology was explored and evaluated earlier this year, according to the Arlington Heights Police Department. The implementation of the technology aimed to increase efficiency and effectiveness of operations in many public safety matters, including but not limited to: search and rescue, traffic collision reconstruction, residential and commercial fires, chemical spills, crime scene searches, structural assessments, and event preplanning. Following months of research by Village of Arlington Heights department personnel, the Village of Arlington Heights approved and purchased the first drones. The purchase was made utilizing funds seized from drug trafficking and criminal enterprise cases.

In the event of severe thunderstorms or heavy rains, the demonstration may be canceled or postponed.

The Arlington Heights Police Department is joining a list of just over 30 law enforcement agencies throughout the State of Illinois that currently deploy drones. ‘As one of the first northwest suburbs to implement a drone program, it is our goal to increase safety in our community by providing our officers, firefighters and Village staff with tools that will assist in response to various incidents,’ said Commander Greg Czernecki. ‘Utilizing drones in public safety emergencies provides personnel with real-time information which may otherwise not have been readily available. Information obtained from a drone can allow for faster action when seconds matter most.’
