The jury has found Amber Guyger guilty of murder (WFAA ABC affiliate LIVE STREAM).
Amber Guyger was found guilty of murder of Botham Jean on Tuesday morning October 1, 2019 for fatally shooting her neighbor. Guyger claimed she shot Botham Jean, after mistakenly entering his apartment, thinking he was an intruder in her own apartment on September 6, 2018. Guyger lived in a third floor apartment and Botham Jean lived directly above her. The jury of eight women and four men deliberated for five to six hours.
Guyger was a member of the Dallas police department for more than four years. She was fired immediately following the shooting.
Guyger admitted to giving Jean only minimal life-saving aid because she said she had only one hand free while she called 911 and her state of mind was frantic. She claimed she administered a sternal rub because she had seen paramedics use this technique as part of her experience as a police officer.
Toxicology test results presented at trial showed she was not intoxicated at the time of the shooting.
Before the opening of the trial, it was revealed that Guyger had been sharing sexually explicit text messages with her police partner and was on the phone with him just before the shooting. Prosecutors explained that those messages indicated that Guyger was not fatigued that day as the defense had claimed, and indicated that Guyger intended to see her partner later that night.
