Roadkill found on February 13, 2015 just north of Morris was confirmed by DNA testing in early March 2015 to be a wolf from a category of gray wolves known as the “Great Lakes Population,” according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The female wolf was about four feet long and weighed “in the 90-pound range,” according to an Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR) district wildlife biologist, Bob Massey.
According to the Illinois DNR, wolves have been been absent from Illinois for more than 150 years until isolated instances of single animals coming down from the north in recent years. A wolf was struck by a car in McHenry County near Chain O’ Lakes State Park in 2005.
The dead wolf near Morris was the 11th wolf reported killed in Illinois since 2002, according to a University of Illinois Extension article published in 2014. Most of the wolves in the period were killed in far northern Illinois.
