Des Plaines and North Maine firefighter/paramedics and Des Plaines police responded about 11:11 a.m. Wednesday August 7, 2019 to at report of a person pinned under a vehicle at Ballard Road and Potter Road in Maine Township. Police were first on the scene and reported the victim was still under the vehicle.
Firefighter/paramedics from the Des Plaines Fire Department and North Maine Fire Protection District found an 86 year-old Des Plaines man pinned under an ambulance. Potter Road was immediately closed in both directions.
The victim was extricated by 11:17 a.m. and transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was listed in critical condition. The victim was identified as Navin Christian of Des Plaines. Christian was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. The autopsy ruled he died of multiple traumatic injuries.
Des Plaines police reported that Navin Christian was crossing Potter Road east to west, just south of Ballard Road about 11 a.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a Lifeline ambulance. The ambulance was in a turn, exiting a 7-Eleven parking to northbound Potter Road when Navin Christian was hit. The Lifeline ambulance, with a two-person crew, was not on an emergency call and was not transporting a patient.
Des Plaines police are investigating, and are working with the Cook County state’s attorneys office to determine if charges will be filed.
