A small plane crashed on westbound Interstate 88 near mile marker 102 in Kane County Monday afternoon when the pilot needed to make an emergency landing.
Illinois State police and Kaneville firefighter and Big Rock and Sugar Grove firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:00 p.m. Monday July 8, 2019 after a small aircraft was involved in an emergency landing on Interstate 88 (Reagan Memorial Tollway near Mile Marker 102) just west of Watson Road and northwest of Kaneville.
The plane clipped a pickup truck during the emergency landing near the Kane County and DeKalb County line.
According to the Illinois State Police, the pilot took off from Waukegan National Airport with a destination of Aurora. Engine trouble started shortly after takeoff, and at 4:01 p.m. the pilot attempted an emergency landing on the median of I-88.
The pilot reportedly suffered an ankle injury, and was transported to a nearby hospital. The driver of the pickup initially did not report any injuries.
According to FAA records, the aircraft is classified as an experimental aircraft known as a 1982 Knight-Wilcox Varieze owned by a man from Wheaton. The aircraft is a fixed-wing, single-engine plane with two tandem seats. The propeller is positioned behind the cockpit.
The crash caused delays and backups on I-88 while some lanes were closed.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were notified, and the crash is still under investigation.
