Ross Perot, a self-made billionaire, philanthropist and presidential candidate has died at age 89 after a 3-month battle with leukemia.
In 1992, Perot became the most successful non-major party presidential candidate in 80 years, with 19 percent of the popular vote, running as an independent candidate against President George H.W. Bush and Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton. Perot also ran unsuccessfully in 1996 after founding the Reform Party in 1995, and after being excluded from the presidential debates.
Ross Perot is considered pioneer of the computer services industry, founding Electronic Data Systems Corp. in Plano, Texas in 1962 and Perot Systems Corp. in Plano, Texas in 1988. According to Forbes, Perot was the 478th richest person in the world in 2019 with a real time net worth of $4.1 Billion dollars on July 9, 2019.
Perot privately organized and sponsored the rescue of two of his EDS employees that were imprisoned in Iran. The rescue team was led by retired U.S. Army Special Forces Colonel Arthur D. “Bull” Simons. Leading up to the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the rescue team waited for a mob of pro-Ayatollah revolutionaries to storm the jail and free all 10,000 inmates. Once freed, the two EDS employees connected with the rescue team in Iran, and the rescue team escorted them out of Iran in a dangerous trip to Turkey.
