Lawmakers in June 2019 passed a capital bill that raises the state gas tax from 19 to 38 cents a gallon on Monday July 1, 2019.
The Daily Herald featured an interview with Craig Grandt at Grandt’s Auto Repair & Shell Service Station on Northwest Highway, just east of Arlington Heights Road at the intersection of Northwest Highway and Belmont Avenue. “This would be your ‘buy’ price, here’s your federal tax, LUST (Leaking Underground Storage Tank) fund,” said Craig Grandt, as he pointed to an online program displayed near the cash register.”And your motor fuel tax — that’ll be 38 cents on Monday,” he added.
There’s more than just a standard consumer gasoline tax increase.
Collar counties were permitted to raise fuel taxes up another 8 cents a gallon.
Motor vehicle license registration fees are increasing from $101 to $151 beginning in 2021.
Electric car registration fees were increased from $34 per vehicle every other year to $251 annually.
Truck registration fees increase by $50 for vehicles 8,000 pounds and under, and by $100 for vehicles weighing more than 8,000 pounds.
The special fuels tax – on diesel fuel, liquefied natural gas or propane used for motor vehicles is increasing from 2.5 cents per gallon to 7.5 cents per gallon.
Parking garages will also be taxed starting January 1, 2020: 6% on daily and hourly garages, and 9% on monthly and annual parking.
Cigarettes taxes are increasing $1 up to $2.98 per pack from the current $1.98 per pack tax.
E-cigarettes will also be taxed at a 15% rate wholesale.
Tax on video gaming machines will increase on July 1, 2019 from 30% to 33%, and then to 34% on July 1, 2020.
The tax and fees increase involved a 362-page bill full of earmarks. Regarding gas tax revenue; 48 percent is going to construction of state roads and bridges, 32 percent to units of local government, and 20 percent to local transit districts.
