Metra Locomotive Fire Just South of Union Station Near Van Buren St and Canal St Chicago

Chicago police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:25 PM Thursday June 13, 2019 to a report of a passenger train fire just south of Union Station at Van Buren St and Canal St Chicago, Il. Deputy District Fire Chief 2-2-1 reported a small fire on top of one locomotive that is outside Union Station. The locomotive is just south of Union Station.

At 6:39 p.m. firefighters were bringing one line to the locomotive, which still had a small fire. All passengers on the train involved were evacuated by 6:39 p.m.

Chicago Fire Department reported there was no smoke inside Union Station. CFD Smoke Ejector 9-2-1 was seen following Engine 109 to the fire scene.

Firefighters were making progress with extinguishing the fire by 6:45 p.m. Fire command requested an Amtrak representative to respond to the scene. Initially there was no confirmation whether the locomotive was an Amtrak or Metra BNSF locomotive. Later Thursday evening, Chicago Fire Department confirmed the fire involved a Metra locomotive on Amtrak rails.

One passenger reported on Twitter that he was evacuated from a Metra BNSF train headed for Aurora. Metra reported on Twitter that two Metra BNSF trains out of Union Station were not operating because of mechanical failures. Metra said Train #1285 departing Chicago Union Station at 6:31 PM – will not operate because of a mechanical failure; and Metra also said that Train #1279 departing Chicago Union Station at 5:50 PM – will not operate due to a mechanical failure.

The Still and Box Alarm was struck out by 6:59 p.m. The EMS Plan 1 remained active as paramedics check the well-being of passengers. Fire command reported a large number of people in Union Station.

The EMS Plan 1 was secured at 7:21 p.m. and the Chicago Fire Department reported there were no injuries.
