The identity of a man was released Monday morning after he died when a paddle boat capsized in Lake Terramere in far north Arlington Heights. David J. Fournier, age 44, of Huntley, died Monday May 27, 2019 after a paddle boat — possibly a red Paddle Wheeler — Limited Edition — capsized in Lake Terramere in the block of 4000 North Terramere (on the east side of the small lake).
David J. Fournier was pronounced dead at 4:41 p.m. Monday at the Northwest Community Hospital Emergency Department. Police and firefighter/paramedics initially responded at 3:30 p.m. Monday. When rescuers arrived, Fournier was already on land and citizens were performing CPR.
Firefighter/paramedics took over with CPR (using a Lucas automated CPR device), airway intubation, assisting his breathing, and treating him with Advanced Life Support protocol for about 30 minutes at the scene. Fournier, who remained without a heartbeat, and was still not breathing on his own, was transferred from the shore to an awaiting rescue ambulance as CPR and rescue breathing were continued. He was transported to the Northwest Community Hospital Emergency Department, where treatment continued for about 30 minutes until he was pronounced dead at 4:41 p.m.
A total of two adults and two children fell into the lake water, but arriving police officers, first on the scene, were told all of the victims were out of the water as CPR was being administered for David J. Fournier. The other three people were evaluated by firefighter/paramedics, but did not require transportation to a hospital.
Arlington Heights Police Department reported that a preliminary investigation found no sign of criminal activity, and that police didn’t suspect foul play.
A determination of cause of death is pending an autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner’s office in Chicago.
Homeowners that live on Lake Terramere have about 14 paddle boats docked on shore around the lake. A number of kayaks, and a few pontoon boats are also docked at the lake. A silver canoe was capsized at the scene Monday afternoon.
On Tuesday morning about 9:30 a.m. residents uprighted a red Paddle Wheeler Limited Edition paddle boat that was capsized near the north shoreline of Lake Terramere — presumably the paddle boat that was involved in the incident.
