With the popularity of short-term home rentals also comes risks, like hidden cameras inside.
A guest of Airbnb, named Nadia, set up her own camera in here living space. She found that the Airbnb host entered a private space and also put his hands down his pants. Police reviewed the video, and confirmed the man had his hand in his pants for 16 seconds, but didn’t file any charges because he didn’t expose himself. The host was removed from the Airbnb platform. He claimed he had an itch.
Cameras in bathrooms and bedrooms are prohibited, but are allowed in common areas if they’re disclosed.
One Airbnb guest found a hidden camera in a smoke detector that aimed toward the bed in the bedroom.
A couple using FlipKey to find a vacation property found that the place they visited was nothing like the photos that represented the property in a FlipKey listing. FlipKey also banned the host that mislead the couple, and reimburse the full booking fee.
In February 2011, Airbnb announced its 1,000,000th night booked, in January 2012, the company announced its 5,000,000th night booked, and in June 2012, Airbnb announced its 10,000,000th night booked.
Airbnb is a shortened version of the original name for the company, AirBedandBreakfast.com, founded in August 2008.
