The Doris Day Animal Foundation confirms the actress passed away at her California home.
Doris Day, the singer and actress and animal rights activist with a wholesome girl-next-door image, has died at age 97. Doris Day’s career as a singer and actress spanned almost 50 years. She is one of the Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Doris Day died early Monday, May 13, 2019 at her Carmel Valley, California, home. The Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed in a statement that she was surrounded by close friends and “had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia.”
Doris was known for singing and acting in film dramas, musicals and innocent sex comedies, predominantly in the 1950s and 1960s. Doris Day’s signature song was “Que Sera Sera” (“Whatever Will Be, Will Be”). In film, her leading men included Rock Hudson, Cary Grant, David Niven, Rex Harrison and James Garner.

Among her most popular films were three romantic comedies with Hudson: “Pillow Talk” (1959), “Lover Come Back” (1961) and “Send Me No Flowers” (1964).
Doris Day received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in “Pillow Talk” (1959).
Doris Day also starred in musicals, including 1953’s “Calamity Jane” (1953) and “The Pajama Game” (1957); the comedy film “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies” (1957) and the drama/mystery thriller film “Midnight Lace” (1960).
Following her final film in 1968 ()With Six You Get Eggroll with Brian Keith), she transitioned to television to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Actress Doris Day was moved to tears by fans who serenaded her on her 92nd birthday in California. The sexy, girl-next-door celebrity leaned over a balcony at her Carmel home and told fans who sang “Happy Birthday” to her, “This is something that is really so touching. And I want you all to know that each one of you means so much to me, you really do.” “We’ll do anything for you,” a fan shouted.
