Everybody wants to travel lighter on their vacations, and over the years, wearable travel technology has made this possible.

Numerous companies have adopted wearables to not only lighten the load for travelers but also ease travel-related stress. In the travel industry, customer satisfaction is paramount to business success. Typically, it’s easier for small businesses to personalize guests’ experiences, but wearable tech is allowing larger entities to have this same advantage.

Wearable travel technology is truly reshaping customers’ experiences and the tourism industry as a whole. We touch on just a few of the companies who have successfully implemented wearables.

Disney’s MagicBands Started It All
The MagicBands program, created by Disney, has proven to be a hit over time as it led the way for other innovative wearables in the travel sector. In fact, in 2017, Disney distributed more than 20 million of these bracelets.

The MagicBands bracelets allow you to access attraction photos, enter parks, pay, and even unlock your hotel room door. But at the very core, the colorful, waterproof wearables eliminated paper tickets and congested park entrances, promoting a stress-free experience at the resort.

“We just treated everybody as a giant blob of people,” said a former manager who worked on Disney’s Next Generation Experience. “It was time to figure out who our customers were so we could better serve them and stop delivering this one-size-fits-all experience.”

Carnival Cruises Follows Suit
Inspired by the MagicBands, the world’s largest cruise line also decided to make the leap to wearable tech a couple of years ago. The OceanMedallion replaces cards and keys, so passengers can relax knowing they don’t have to keep track of bags or wallets. Carnival developed the wearables in less than three years.

The medallion is about the size of a quarter, and it’s connected to an app that allows customers to completely customize their vacation. From ordering food to unlocking your room, Carnival has designed their wearable to save time and boost customer happiness.

Universal Orlando, A Disney Competitor, Also Follows the Trend
Disney isn’t the only park in Orlando to use high-tech bracelets. Volcano Bay implemented wearables a few years ago to decrease customer waiting time. In 2016, Universal predicted that it “will redefine the way guests experience water parks.”

The TapuTapu bracelet is a convenient device; with one tap, somebody can put themselves in line for an attraction while they enjoy other aspects of the park. Additionally, the TapuTapu notifies guests of long lines and controls interactive surprises throughout Volcano Bay.

Airlines and Hotels Apply Travel Tech
In addition to travel-specific wearables, businesses and customers can also use wearables already on the market.

If you own a smartwatch, you’ll be pleased to know that airlines have started to create apps for travelers. Through the app, passengers can access their boarding passes and receive real-time updates.

Similar to the airlines, hotels are putting wearables to use in order to boost guest satisfaction. Employees will use wearables to effectively communicate with multilingual co-workers and quickly respond to guests. These devices have improved employees’ efficiency and overall hotel operation.
