1 DEAD IN MOTOR VEHICLE; 3 HURT IN CTA TRAIN
A car landed somehow on CTA Blue Line tracks and was struck by a westbound CTA Blue Line train Tuesday night in Rosemont.
A SUV crash with a CTA Blue Line train between Rosemont and O’Hare International Airport killed a 70-year-old Bartlett woman Tuesday night, and injured three of eight people that were on the train.
Sara Giancola, age 70, of Bartlett, was critically injured in the crash with the CTA Blue Line crash, which occurred about 8:34 p.m. Tuesday March 13, 2019.. Rosemont firefighter/paramedics had to extricate her and remove her from the SUV she was driving. Chicago firefighters were also on the scene to assist Rosemont firefighter/paramedics, and Park Ridge firefighter/paramedics were also dispatched to the scene with an ambulance.
Sara Giancola was pronounced dead shortly after the crash, dying from the injuries she suffered in the crash.
Three people were injured on the train, including a female conductor. Although it was initially believed that one person on board the train suffered serious injuries, all three of the injured people on board the train were hospitalized with minor injuries. All patients were transported either to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge or to Presence Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago. A total of seven passengers were on the train at time of the crash.
According to the Illinois State Police, Sara Giancola was driving a 2014 Ford SUV westbound in the far left lane of westbound I-190. Giancola lost control of the SUV due to an unknown reason, and the SUV rolled over and dropped down an embankment near Mannheim Road, and then landed partially on the CTA tracks. The front of the Ford SUV was subsequently hit by the CTA Blue Line train, according to Illinois State Police.
Traffic on I-190 was congested and delayed for several hours after the crash. All lanes were re-opened 1 a.m. Wednesday.
The CTA halted service between the O’Hare and Harlem Avenue as crews worked to clear the scene, inspect the tracks, and restore electricity to the electric powered trains. The CTA resumed Blue Line service to the affected part of the line about 2:15 a.m.
During the halted service, CTA buses transported passengers who were disrupted.
