O’Hare International Airport in Chicago — only about 6 miles from the southernmost tip of Arlington Heights — has regained the title of the busiest airport in the U.S. after statistics from 2018 revealed that O’Hare International Airport surpassed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for the first time since O’Hare had the top spot in 2014.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released data today, Monday, February 4, 2019 showing that O’Hare had more than 903,000 arrivals and departures during 2018. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was second, with more than 895,000 arrivals and departures.
Los Angeles International Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Denver International Airport rank third, fourth and fifth.
O’Hare operations increased 4.2 percent in 2018, compared with a 1.8 percent increase at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Proposals in a design contest were released in January 2019 as Chicago searches for a lead architect for an $8.5 billion O’Hare expansion project that is expected to open in 2028.
United Airlines, which is the largest carrier at O’Hare, has been adding more flights from its hub (O’Hare) to smaller cities throughout the Midwest.
The O’Hare expansion is expected to be funded by airline ticket sales.
