With extremely cold temperatures lingering tonight, even minimal snow of only 0.1 inch can make roads very slippery. Arlington Heights and the northwest suburbs are forecast to get about 1.3 inch of snow between 5:00 p.m. and midnight Thursday/Friday — although 2 inches of snow is possible. Nearby counties of Kane, Kendall, Will and DeKalb are in a Winter Weather Advisory zone.
Winds will be very light from the southwest, south and southeast as the night progresses. Temperatures will climb all night Thursday/Friday and all day Friday, but will still be well below freezing (32°F) on Friday. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing at about 9:00 a.m. Saturday.
Weather Radar (also nexrad.chgowx.com) shows a large area of low intensity snow precipitation moving northwest to southeast over all of northern Illinois.
Our latest round of accumulating snow is overspreading the area this aftn. Expect to encounter snow covered roads & longer travel times during commute, as snow will quickly stick due to very cold air & ground temps. 2-5" amounts forecast in darker blue shaded areas. #ilwx #inwx pic.twitter.com/YkFihH16xB

A significant warmup is on the way this weekend and early next week, and while it may feel refreshing after this bitterly cold week, there are dangers that come with such a rapid thaw: https://t.co/o4JHnG9Nss pic.twitter.com/T8WsHIGPQx
